Frequently asked questions ...

What are the hardware requirements?

Hardware requirements depend on the type of installation. For small clinic/offices with 2 to 3 workstations one workstation can act as database server as well as client to the database. For offices/clinics that require more than three workstations it is recommended that a server be installed. Depending on the number of users this server can be a fast Windows based PC or a Pentium 4 based PC running the Linux Operating System or Microsoft Server. For larger environments we recommend a Linux or Microsoft based server with redundant hard drives. Optionally, data replication can be used if required.
Workstation:
Minimum: Celeron based PC with WinXP-Pro. 256MB Ram Network connection Pentium 4 with WinXP-Pro, 2.8Ghz Processor, 512MB Ram.
Server:
Minimum: Pentium 4, 2.8 Ghz or faster, 512MB Ram, at least 80Gig of free disk space.
Recommended: Pentium 4 or better, 1Gig Ram, 160Gig Raid Drive, Tape Backup, Windows 2000 or 2003 Server or Linux Redhat 4 or Centos 4 Server operating system. (Most flavors of Linux or Unix like operating system should work as a server). For 3 or less workstations one of the workstations can be the database server running Microsoft XP-Pro. This should be a Pentium 4 PC with at least 512MB of memory and sufficient free disk space 60Gig or more)
Scanner:
Twain compatible scanner with document feeder (optional). A PC capable of processing a large amount of documents is highly recommended.
Remote Access:
Firewall capable of VPN client access for security (optional).

When upgrading do we have to install the updates on each workstation?

No you don't. It's done everytime you start up MedSQL. In order to keep the cost of ownership to the bare minimum, the system was designed to automatically update the client once the user starts MedSQL.  All updates are stored in the database along with the data and only takes seconds to update.  The workstations simple run a "Launcher" which will check for the latest updates everytime you load MedSQL and installs them when available.

What type of database does MedSQL use?

MedSQL uses an open source relational database called Postgresql.  It has more than 15 years of active development and a proven architecture that has earned it a strong reputation for reliability, data integrity, and correctness. It runs on all major operating systems, including Windows, Linux, UNIX (AIX, BSD, HP-UX, SGI IRIX, Mac OS X, Solaris, Tru64). For more information on postgresql go to http://www.postgresql.org

What about support?

MedSQL is supported by the developer Cara Information Systems Ltd.  Support is provided to customers with an annual support contract or to customers without contract on an hourly bases.  Customers with support contracts will receive software updates and installation support.  Hourly support is provided to customers that choose not to purchase a support contract.  Network and network security support consulting, server and workstation installation can be provided on an hourly basis.  If required, we can privide a turn-key solution of workstations, server, scanner and printers as well as firewall setup with remote secure access.

Can we get changes made to customize MedSQL?

Realizing that our software can't possibly be a 100% fit too all our clients, we provide custom changes and additions to MedSQL.

Can I access my data remotly with my Laptop?
